The Willamina Elementary School in Willamina, Oregon, has a poster contest featuring a different fruit or vegetable every season. Each student in the school makes a poster about the featured produce item. The only rule, is that the poster must contain three nutrition facts about the item. The students research the fruit/vegetable usually on the internet or through research in the school library.
Every poster is displayed in the cafeteria. Each entrance is given a small participation prize like a pencil, stress ball, etc. then, three Grand Champion Winners are chosen by a panel of school volunteers. Some of the featured fruits and vegetables from the past are, Corn in the fall, Pears in Winter and Carrots in the spring. Pear Posters can be seen in the backgraound of the attached photo.
They also get to experience the featured item at lunch. Each time the featured item is served on the salad bar, participation jumps 25%.
