Dillard Drive's fourth grade students joined Chef Walter Royal (from the Angus Barn Restaurant) in preparing a "Harvest Salad." This delicious salad,
using local farmer Ted Sherrod's home-grown apples and cabbage, was part of
a classroom nutrition education lesson where students learned how to
experience new food tastes. After preparing and tasting the salad, the class
then provided the recipe to food service staff, who prepared it for the
entire school to enjoy, as part of their lunch!
This event launched the American Institute of Wine and Food's "Days of
Taste" partnership with Team Nutrition. Chef members of AIWF
chapters around the country will be teaming with school food service
managers and directors to teach children to smell, touch and taste fresh
foods and encourage healthful eating habits and cooking skills at a young
age.
Tarawa Tereace Elementary School Tarawa, NC
Fun and entertaining for the entire family, a Mini Chef contest was a great way for everyone to be involved in a Team Nutrition activity together. Students from Tarawa Terrace Elementary School in North Carolina helped their parents make a healthy recipe at home and brought it in to school to enter the contest. Recipes were judged on nutritional content, eye appeal, number of ingredients, ease of preparation and cost. Student winners received "Mini chef" buttons. Parents were given "Major Chef" buttons.
