GSNA Member Receives National Louise Sublette Award of Excellence
JoAnn Kilby, food service manager at Sedalia Park Elementary School, received the GSNA National Louise Sublette Award in Los Angeles, CA. JoAnn was recognized for increasing school lunch participation from 76 percent at the beginning of the school year to over 90 percent in December 2005. She was able to get over 250 students to sign a pledge to eat healthier and exercise more daily. Out of the 23 schools that applied for a grant from "CIGNA Health Care Foundation", JoAnn was the only food service manager who received it. She had also helped develop an afterschool program known as the Fitness and Nutrition Club, with the help of high school students, volunteer parents, and the PTA. JoAnn and her entire staff conducted school-wide promotions for each grade level, which included messages about healthy eating, exercise, snacking, and school meals.

A Letter to Team Nutrition
Hello!
I am a first grade teacher at Creswell Elementary School in Opelousas, Louisiana. As part of our Nutrition and Hygiene unit our class is participating in the Fruit and Vegetable Challenge. This month, our March goal was 405 Fruits and Vegetables and we reached our goal a week early!
The students have been learning about the food pyramid and paying very close attention to exactly what they are eating and learning about what fruits and vegetables are.
They are so excited to eat healthy and exercise, this challenge, as well as the MyPyramid program has been wonderful for my kids!
